Help support MMF’s ground-breaking research and conservation along Mozambique’s southern coastline, where we’ve been operating since 2003.
About this Fundraiser
Earlier in 2024, MMF co-founder, Dr Andrea Marshall, suffered a severe brain aneurysm. After fighting for her life, she is now undergoing intensive rehabilitation.
Our team is making contingency plans to continue her projects through 2024 (and thereafter, as necessary).
While we’re certain that she’ll want to be back in the water as fast as humanly possible – somewhat sooner, knowing Andrea – we’re lucky to have a world-class scientific team at MMF to fill in for her while she focuses on her recovery.
That’s why we’ve created this temporary fundraiser through MMF to explicitly help provide these bridging efforts in Mozambique.
Your support will help us to continue Andrea’s work.
About the Mozambique Program
The MMF team, led by Dr Andrea Marshall and Dr Simon Pierce, pioneered the exploration of the Mozambican coastline, made countless scientific discoveries, created comprehensive marine education and conservation programs, and is continuing with world-leading research on threatened marine species, specifically endangered and little-known sharks and rays.
Our primary objective in Mozambique is to safeguard the globally significant marine megafauna populations that occur in the Inhambane Province. To accomplish this, we are supporting the development of a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) that protect the coastal movement corridors of migratory species, while encompassing the critical habitats of the animals that call this area home.
“I particularly want to salute Andrea Marshall and her team at the Marine Megafauna Foundation—they work with so many large creatures that are so important, and so threatened.”
– Dr Sylvia Earle
“
MMF’s relentless research, breakthrough peer-reviewed publications, community advocacy, and international coordination have been critical in safeguarding our marine giants, and the last truly wild places in our oceans.
I see MMF as one of the world’s most fearless, effective and financially efficient marine science organizations of our time.
