Why adopt a great white shark?

White sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are large apex predators and accomplished ambush hunters. The largest are just over 7 meters (23 feet) long.

They mature late: female white sharks only become adults at about 33 years, and they are estimated to live to at least 73.

Sharks that cross borders

White sharks are covered by the Convention on Migratory Species, which asks countries to cooperate to protect animals that cross their borders. In a review led by Diego Bezerra of the University of Queensland and co-authored by MMF's Dr. Chris Rohner and Dr. Simon Pierce, white sharks linked Australia with more places than any other shark in the review. White sharks and whale sharks between them accounted for 38 movement studies, yet 18 of the 29 species reviewed had no published movement data linked to Australian waters.

Shark movements connect countries with different approaches to fishing and conservation, and governments can only cooperate on protection once they know which countries share which species.

How your great white shark adoption helps

MMF does not run a white shark project. Your adoption supports MMF's work as a whole, including our Migratory Species Program, which brings together our research on animals that cross national borders, the same question the Australian review set out to answer.
